Demand for naming “Silchar” Railway Station as “Bhasha Shahid Station, Silchar”.

The Issue

To

The Hon’ble Chief Minister of Assam

Dispur, Guwahati.

Subject:  Naming of “Silchar” Railway Station as “Bhasha Shahid Station, Silchar”.

Ref:    1. NOC accorded by Home & Political Department, Government of Assam   bearing no. PLA.463/2008/432 dated February 10, 2016.

2. NOC accorded by Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India bearing no. 11/7/2016-M&G/1496 dated November 7, 2016.

Revered Sir,

While extending our heartiest congratulations towards you in assuming the chair of Honourable Chief Minister of Assam, we take the opportunity to bring to your noble fore the demand for implementation of the naming of “Silchar” Railway Station as “Bhasha Shahid Station, Silchar”.

Sir, the demand has been longstanding – the people of Barak Valley, en masse, have been striving for this demand since 2005. As mentioned in the references above, both the Central Government and the State Government have, in principle, accepted the proposal long back in 2016 by according NOC for the said nomenclature. Presently, it is only required to implement the said naming through Gazette notification by the Government of Assam and to intimate concerned authorities as mentioned in the NOC letter by the Government of India (Ref-2).

However, sir, strangely enough, the matter has been kept in abeyance for the last five years for unknown reason thus erupting discontent among the mass people of Barak Valley. Here it is worthwhile to mention that this demand emanates from the sentiment of the people of the Valley, genesis of which lies on the language movements of the valley and their fallouts.

Sir, we are confident that you would understand the arguments and sentiment of the people of Barak Valley. We benignly appeal before your judicious self to take time-bound effective steps towards implementation of the proposal, for which favour we shall remain obliged.

Thanking you,

Yours,
