Home Sweet Sundance: Keep the Festival in Utah
Beginning in 2027, the Sundance Film Festival is at jeopardy of finding a new home. The Sundance Institute is in the process of deciding which city will be the host city for the festival, for 2027 and beyond. The 3 finalists are Salt Lake City and Park City, UT combined, Cincinnati, OH and Boulder, CO. It would be devastating to Utah's Culture and Economy if we lose this independent, beautiful 10-day event. Let's sign this petition to try and keep Sundance in Utah for many years to come.
The Sundance Film Festival has been a staple of Utah for over 46 years. Founded in 1978 as the Utah/US Film Festival, Robert Redford brought a vision of independent art and freedom of expression to the world of filmmaking. With tens of thousands of visitors in attendance, and tens of millions of dollars made for the Utah economy each year, Sundance has proven to be vital for Park City's and Salt Lake City's communities. Let's keep it in the mountains of Utah. Let's keep the Sundance Film Festival in Salt Lake City and Park City for many years to come.
2024's Sundance Film Festival brought in an estimated $106.4 million spent by out-of-state visitors during the festival, and an estimated 1,700+ jobs were generated for Utah residents. This contributed to $69.7 million in wages, and generated around $13.8 million in state and local taxes. (source: Los Angeles Times article from 1/24/2025 "Sundance is moving to one of 3 cities. Here's what we know about their bids")
Sundance is a place where Utahns can come together with outside perspectives and share ideas with each other, learn from each other, and start new conversations about the impact of independent film. Utah - Home, Sweet Sundance.
This petition is a plea by the people to keep the Sundance Film Festival in Utah for many years to come. It has been a huge part of Utah's cultural identity for over 46 years. The Sundance Film Festival contributes immensely to Utah's overall economy each year, supporting local businesses, jobs, and tourism.
We, the undersigned, call on the Sundance Institute to keep the Sundance Film Festival in Utah for many years to come.
