The Government have announced they are looking at how sentencing powers can be increased for Judges in the cases where corrosive acid has been deliberately used as a weapon and has caused life changing injuries. However, we still believe that the message should be very clear to potential offenders... Use acid to deliberately injure and you will face life imprisonment, just as if you had taken the person's life..which in the worst cases, injuries caused do take away the victim's life, physically, emotionally and psychologically. Prevention education is important, as are effective controls on the supply of corrosive substances, but ultimately, there has to be a deterrent strong enough that potential offenders know that if they use acid to maim, they face life imprisonment in the most serious cases. That could mean whole life terms! The Home Secretary seems to agree with life sentences for these attacks, that needs to be reinforced with petitions such as this to ensure it is acted upon.
