There is a demonstration outside City Hall 4:30-6:30 pm TODAY Tues Sept 14th to protest this injustice and save our public land. Stop by on your way home from work, even if you're late. Attendees will have some extra signs, but feel free to bring your own. Let's show community support for protection of Hollywood Beach. Some residents have signed up to speak inside City Hall at 5 PM, but registration is now closed, so please just join us outside if you did not pre-register to go inside and speak in front of the City Commission.

This public land has deed restrictions for "open space, park, recreation, and public purpose." This condo (99 year lease) would be 347 feet tall and 188 units. Mayor Levy says that they can ignore height/density restrictions because it's public land.

The city has not given the public one in-person meeting about the condo. They won’t even tell the public that they have the ability to oppose. All of the emails have been misleading, as if it’s a done deal. Commissioner Shuham CShuham@hollywoodfl.org asked that the city manager look into other ways to fund a remodel of the community center. Has he? (You can email the city manager Wazir Ishmael about this). Wishmael@hollywoodfl.org

No single-use plastics are allowed on public property, so please bring a reusable bottle of water. This is a family-friendly event.

Thank you, South Florida Wildlands Association for writing a letter opposing this project:

"Dear City of Hollywood Commissioners,
South Florida Wildlands Association is a Broward County-based environmental organization that was founded in March of 2010 to protect wildlife and habitat in the South Florida region. Our conservation work is roughly divided into two areas: 1) work on public lands where we advocate in front of public agencies to put habitat and wildlife protection ahead of the recreational use of those lands, and; 2) our efforts to conserve rapidly-dwindling wildlife habitat on privately owned lands.
The issue before you today is an unusual one. Here we see a small patch of undeveloped beachfront property that is owned by the City of Hollywood and is being appropriately managed as natural beachfront habitat. Another part of the property is a community center and park. Dune vegetation has been restored and protected and, small as it may be, that small patch of city owned land provides a relatively dark and undisturbed habitat for nesting sea turtles and other wildlife which come to forage in the dunes. It is also a part of a stretch of restored dunes nearly a quarter of a mile long that is of immense spiritual and aesthetic value to Hollywood residents and its many visitors. Broward County contains 23 miles of beaches on the Atlantic Ocean – very little remains that looks like this site.
Our understanding is that the City of Hollywood is currently in negotiations with the Related Group to lease the property for the purpose constructing a new 30-story condominium. A recent Sun-Sentinel articles on the proposed deal described the financial benefits to the City of Hollywood in the form of lease rent and property taxes.
There is no question that the City can make money off this deal – but it is also certain that Hollywood Beach will be, ecologically speaking, poorer if the transaction goes through. Whether construction is done on the dunes or not, the entire area will be impacted by a building far larger than anything nearby. When the time comes, we urge you to reject this project and leave this rare stretch of intact beach habitat as is."-
Matthew Schwartz, Director, South Florida Wildlands Association
