Hold the Government Accountable: FNMI Incarceration Rates

Hold the Government Accountable: FNMI Incarceration Rates
The Issue
Indigenous people make up roughly 32% of the federal prison in Canada as of November 2021, Indigenous people only make up less than five percent of the Canadian population. Something even more alarming: Indigenous women make up nearly 50% of the women's federal prison population. Prior to 1960, Indigenous people only made up one to two percent of the prison population and ever since these numbers have increased drastically and show no signs of stopping. Recently Justin Trudeau said the government will eliminate some mandatory minimum sentences as yet another weak attempt to address the Indigenous incarceration problem. The increasing rates of Indigenous people incarcerated in recent years prove that previous government-implemented solutions to the issue have been ineffective and the government must take a bolder approach to reform. Take action. Sign the petition. Raise awareness. Fight for change.
