We, the undersigned, call upon the The Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission and the Australian Tax Office to re-evaluate the charitable status of the Australian Jewish Association (AJA). 

This organisation, which has pledged to combat antisemitism, advance Judaism, and promote Jewish culture, has strayed significantly from its stated mission.

Instead, the AJA appears to be prioritising the promotion of Zionism and aggressively labelling critics of Zionism as antisemites.

Why This Matters

1. Misalignment with Stated Mission: The AJA’s focus on Zionism diverts resources from advancing Jewish culture and religious education. This misalignment is a betrayal of the trust placed in the organisation by its supporters and the wider community.
2. Conflation of Criticism and Hate Speech: The AJA’s practice of categorising all criticism of Zionism as antisemitic undermines legitimate political discourse and diminishes the seriousness of genuine antisemitism. This tactic is misleading and harmful.
3. Aggressive Tactics: The AJA’s approach to dealing with dissent—by branding critics as antisemitic—constitutes a form of intimidation and harassment. Such behaviour is unacceptable and violates principles of free speech and open dialogue. 

Our Call to Action

We urge the ACNC and ATO to:

Re-evaluate the AJA’s Charitable Status: Investigate whether the AJA still meets the criteria for its charity subtype, given its apparent focus on political advocacy over its stated charitable objectives.

Ensure Accountability: Implement measures to ensure the AJA aligns its activities with its declared mission to advance Judaism, Jewish culture, and combat antisemitism without conflating it with political criticism.

Promote Transparency: Require the AJA to provide transparent reporting on how its funds are used to advance its stated charitable purposes.

Protect Free Speech: Encourage open and respectful discourse on Zionism and antisemitism without the use of intimidation tactics.
