Hold Student Loan Servicers Accountable for Errors That Harm Borrowers
The Issue
I am done. And I know I am not the only one.
A few days ago, I received a notice from my federal student loan servicer claiming I was nearly $500 past due for August 2026. The problem? I have a billing statement from that same servicer showing I owed $0 for that month. Now, I am approaching the point where this alleged delinquency could negatively impact my credit, all because of an error I did not make.
Unfortunately, this is just one of many issues I have experienced.
My student loan servicer has made unexplained changes to my repayment status, placed loans into forbearance without my request, provided conflicting payment amounts, and experienced significant delays processing repayment plans.
Trying to correct these mistakes has practically become a second job.
I have spent hours on the phone multiple times a week, sometimes waiting nearly two hours just to speak with a representative. Even then, issues frequently remain unresolved. Speaking directly with a supervisor is often not an option, leaving borrowers dependent on callbacks that may come while they are working or otherwise unavailable.
Meanwhile, the consequences of these errors fall on us.
Student loan servicing mistakes can cause serious financial hardship, damage credit, create significant emotional and psychological stress, and jeopardize years of progress toward loan forgiveness programs like Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF).
Borrowers are held to strict payment deadlines and repayment requirements. Why aren’t the companies managing our loans held to equally strict standards?
I am calling on the U.S. Department of Education, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, and federal policymakers to establish stronger accountability measures for federal student loan servicers, including MOHELA, Aidvantage, and Nelnet.
We are demanding:
-Better staffing and training to ensure borrowers receive accurate information and timely assistance.
-Enforceable processing and resolution deadlines for repayment applications, account corrections, and billing disputes.
Accessible supervisors and meaningful escalation procedures for urgent or unresolved issues.
-Clear written notification and transparency whenever repayment amounts, loan statuses, or forbearance conditions change.
Protection against inaccurate credit reporting when alleged delinquencies result from documented servicing errors.
-Protection of loan forgiveness eligibility and progress when administrative errors or processing delays occur.
-Real accountability and consequences for repeated servicing failures, including stronger oversight and enforceable performance standards.
Student loan borrowers should not have to spend hours fighting to correct mistakes they did not make.
We deserve accurate billing, timely resolutions, transparent communication, and meaningful protections against financial harm.
If you have experienced student loan servicing errors, unreasonable processing delays, or difficulty getting problems resolved, please sign and share this petition.
If borrowers are held accountable for their mistakes, student loan servicers must be held accountable for theirs.
