I am writing this petition out of frustration and a sense of unethical referee practices as a passionate football fan. Time and again, we have all witnessed moments where pivotal game-changing calls have been made by referees, altering the course of a game, only for these decisions to be later deemed incorrect after the game has concluded. This has directly impacted the outcomes of numerous football games, leaving fans, players, and teams alike feeling marginalized and powerless in the face of erroneous judgments.

The integrity of football relies on the fairness and accuracy of its officiating. Sadly, the current system often sees referees making crucial mistakes without any subsequent accountability, tarnishing the spirit of fair play that is ostensibly at the heart of the sport. Given the technological advancements at our disposal, including video assistant referees (VAR), there is no reason why these errors should go unaddressed or be without consequence.

I urge football governing bodies, AKA THE NCAA, to implement a robust accountability framework for referees. This framework should entail thorough reviews of referee performances and mandate consequences for errors, which could range from personal fines to suspension from officiating duties, depending on the severity of the mistake. Furthermore, transparency in these reviews should be prioritized, with findings presented to the public to maintain trust in the system.

Additionally, empowering teams to appeal decisions in real-time and during the game could provide an immediate remedy to disputed calls, thereby reducing the potential long-term damage caused by incorrect decisions.

Statistics reveal that a staggering number of refereeing errors remain uncorrected post-game, despite evidence brought forth by video analysis. For instance, this 2026 football season including games played by Western Michigan and Notre Dame.  

It's time to demand change and uphold the standards of excellence expected in college football. We owe it to the players who dedicate their lives to the sport, the fans who passionately support their teams, and the spirit of fairness that football is supposed to embody.
