My child’s dad owes thousands in child maintenance and doesn’t spend a penny towards the child’s upbringing, including occasions like Christmas and birthdays. I find it deeply unfair for any child to suffer because a non-paying parent simply gets away with this neglect. These parents should face charges of child neglect and have their parental responsibilities stripped.

Child maintenance is a critical financial support system meant to ensure that children receive the care, attention, and resources they need as they grow. It’s not merely about financial aid; it’s about accountability and taking responsibility for the biological duty one has signed up for once they bring a child into the world. Unfortunately, far too many parents neglect this responsibility, leaving the other parent to shoulder the burden alone.

Statistics show that unpaid child support is a pervasive issue. According to a report by the Office for National Statistics, in the UK alone, billions are owed in unpaid child support. This financial neglect puts undue stress on the custodial parent and denies children basic needs and opportunities that can profoundly affect their development.

We propose a reform that mandates legal accountability for parents who neglect their financial responsibilities to their children. Those failing to provide financially should be charged with child neglect. Additionally, there should be mechanisms to strip irresponsible parents of parental responsibilities until they make amends.

This is a ongoing thing that needs to change, too many non paying parents are just getting away with this but I would be different if the parent the child lived with did this to them, you would automatically be done for child neglect and this is not ok anymore and more enforcements need to be put into place.
