Media outlets play a crucial role in framing our understanding of the world. However, when these pivotal platforms spread misinformation or half-truths, they not only misguide the public but also erode the trust that is fundamental to a functioning democracy. The aim of this petition is to enact legislation that would prevent media companies from irresponsibly broadcasting lies, half-truths, or intentionally misleading information. According to a 2016 study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, false information spreads six times faster on social media platforms than the truth. This alarming fact underlines the necessity for stricter regulation on media companies.

Changing how media reports and shares information with us doesn’t fix the damage that has been done to public trust, but it allows us a platform from which we can start rebuilding.
