Forced Encounter (JVA context):
A forced encounter was a coercive practice used at the John Volken Academy (JVA) in which a participant who resisted rules, questioned authority, or violated the “manual” in any way would be physically surrounded and made to sit down while others verbally attacked them. These sessions were framed as “correction” but were experienced as alienating, isolating, and psychologically damaging. Participants were subjected to public shaming, guilt induction, and relentless criticism that could be arbitrarily adjusted according to changing “manual” guidelines.

In later years, this practice evolved into what was known as the “shoe”, where participants could also face forced isolation if they tried to leave or resisted the process. The encounters were often terrifying, emotionally scarring, and spiritually damaging, leaving lasting effects on trust, mental health, and a sense of personal worth. Participants who were closer to staff or directors sometimes colluded against others, creating dynamics akin to bullying or gang-like behavior. Despite the trauma, some survivors noted the absurdity or theatricality of these encounters, highlighting the coercive and psychologically manipulative nature of the practice.
