Hold Institutions Accountable for Relying on Inaccurate AI Detection Tools

Hold Institutions Accountable for Relying on Inaccurate AI Detection Tools
The Issue
Students across the nation are being falsely accused of cheating on assignments, particularly papers, due to inaccurate AI detection tools.
As a student of Loyola University Chicago, I attended their Rome campus, John Felice Rome Center, for my entire freshman year. Unfortunately, I was falsely accused of cheating on an essay and was punished solely based on Turnitin – despite a lack of evidence and inconsistencies in the investigation. I followed all the rules in terms of reporting this incident, but it seems nobody wanted to help me including Loyola’s leadership both on the Rome campus and Chicago campus.
This is a national issue that jeopardizes academic integrity, due process, and the futures of numerous kids. It is not just a personal one.
AI detection tools are ambiguous and prone to errors. As a result, universities such as Yale, NYU, Georgetown, UCLA, Vanderbilt, and 20+ more universities in the United States have banned AI detectors.
I invite Congress and the appropriate authorities to:
Begin investigations into how AI detection tools are used in higher education
Hold institutions, including Loyola University Chicago, accountable that use these tools inappropriately to punish students
Create federal guidelines to control and guarantee the accuracy of AI detection technology
Ensure a fair review, access to evidence, protection from retaliation and protection of students’ due process rights
