The Issue

We, the Fairfield University College Democrats, call on university leadership to address growing concerns about inconsistent administrative responses to issues affecting our campus community.

From racial remarks by our students toward a Central Connecticut State University volleyball player to inviting campus speakers whose views raise concerns about equal democratic participation, recent events have left students fed up with the campus climate. As bias incidents continue and racial and socioeconomic divisions persist, we can no longer accept silence or lack of accountability from our institution.

Diversity should mean more than representation. When Fairfield celebrates the few diverse members of its student body but fails to address the discrimination and inequalities these students face, it sends the message that minority students are valued for statistics rather than as community members whose concerns deserve to be heard. We ALL deserve to feel we belong here and that our experiences and well-being matter.

We call on Fairfield University to:

1. Issue a public statement acknowledging students' concerns about bias incidents, racial inequality, and the university's response to recent events.
2. Commit to a formal meeting with the university president and Board of Trustees to hear students' concerns directly and discuss concrete steps toward institutional change.
3. Provide greater accountability in how the university responds to bias incidents and discrimination concerns.
4. Review campus speaker policies to ensure university-sponsored invitations reflect thoughtful consideration of the university's values and their impact on the campus community.
5. Demonstrate a consistent commitment to student well-being by regularly addressing issues of inequality and discrimination regardless of which communities are affected.

We ask for more than statements of support. We want an administration that takes responsibility and lives up to its higher calling through concrete action. Fairfield must show that its commitment to diversity and Jesuit values goes beyond public image and into the everyday experiences of the students who make up this community.
