Hold DUI offenders accountable with Watson waiver
The Issue
My life was shattered on January 25, 2026, when my only son and his best friend were tragically killed in Butte County, California. This horrific incident was caused by a repeated DUI offender who had been previously caught driving under the influence in October 2025. Despite the clear evidence, including his toxicology report indicating various substances, there have been no legal consequences for the driver responsible for this heartbreaking loss.
The pain of losing a child due to preventable, reckless behavior is indescribable, and what makes it worse is the absence of justice. It is unacceptable that repeat DUI offenders continue to evade accountability, sometimes with fatal outcomes. There must be stricter measures in place to deter such individuals from reoffending and to protect innocent lives on the road.
That’s why I’m advocating for mandatory signing of the Watson waiver immediately upon release from the drunk tank in jail. The Watson waiver, rooted in California law, clearly informs individuals that driving under the influence is extremely dangerous and could result in murder charges if their actions result in someone’s death. It serves as a stark warning and could possibly deter individuals from making the same fatal choices repeatedly.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, every day, about 32 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes, which is equivalent to one person every 45 minutes. Implementing the Watson waiver as a mandatory procedure for DUI offenders would legally reinforce the consequences of their actions, potentially saving countless lives.
By signing this petition, you are joining me in calling on California lawmakers and law enforcement agencies to take immediate and concrete steps to enforce the Watson waiver. Such action would send a clear message that DUI offenses are severe and will be met with stringent legal consequences.
Please help us prevent future tragedies and ensure that no other parent has to experience the devastation of losing a child due to the leniency towards DUI offenders. Together, we can honor my son's memory and fight for justice.
