The Issue

For more than a year, right-wing commentator Candace Owens has promoted a dangerous and deeply personal conspiracy theory about Brigitte Macron, the First Lady of France.

She’s posted videos, run social media campaigns, and published a multi-part series with one goal: to convince millions of followers that Brigitte Macron is secretly a man.

It’s not satire. It’s not harmless speculation. It’s a targeted disinformation campaign—one that has already led to multiple arrests for cyberbullying in France and prompted the Macrons to file a 22-count defamation lawsuit in the United States.

This isn’t just about one public figure. It’s about what kind of speech we allow to dominate our platforms and political conversations. Owens has used YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), and other platforms to repeatedly amplify false, degrading, and gender-based attacks—then monetize that content through ads, sponsorships, and merchandise.

It’s time for those platforms—and the public—to stop pretending this is “just opinion.”

We’re calling on:

  • YouTube, X, and other platforms to review Candace Owens’ content for clear violations of misinformation and harassment policies, and to demonetize or suspend repeat offenders
  • Media outlets to stop legitimizing voices that profit from conspiracy and personal attacks under the guise of “commentary”
  • Public figures and advocacy organizations to denounce these tactics—because disinformation targeting women in politics is becoming normalized

This isn’t free speech—it’s weaponized slander dressed up as viral content. If we don’t draw a line now, more women in public life will be next.
