The Issue

Every year, countless Canadians have their property damaged during repairs or servicing—whether it’s at an auto shop, electronics store, or appliance repair service. Too often, when something goes wrong, the business denies responsibility. That leaves everyday peope paying out of pocket for damage they didn’t cause.

If nothing changes, more consumers will continue to suffer financial loss and stress. Many are forced to give up, simply because they can't afford legal fees or navigate complicated claims processes. Businesses have the power and the resources, while individuals are left without recourse. It’s an uneven, unfair system that puts all the risk on the consumer.

Now is the time to act. As complaints rise and accountability remains rare, we need new laws that put consumers first. No one should lose their car, fridge, or phone—or pay hundreds if not thousands in damages—because a business won’t own up to a mistake. The government must step in to restore fairness and trust.

We, the undersigned, call on the federal government to:

·        Enact strict liability laws for businesses when customer property is damaged during service.

·        Require all service providers to carry commercial repair liability insurance.

·        Create or expand a provincial/federal consumer protection tribunal with binding enforcement power.

This is about fairness, safety, and justice. Sign the petition today to demand better protections for Canadians.
