Hold Baylor Accountable for Leaking Trans Kids’ Medical Records

The Issue

A former Baylor College of Medicine resident accessed and leaked confidential medical records of transgender children to a conservative media activist. The patients were not under his care. One affected family is now suing Baylor in federal court, saying the institution's failure to properly supervise and vet its trainee enabled a devastating breach of trust.

This is not about politics. It is about basic safety, medical privacy, and the duty of care every hospital owes to the people it serves. When children's medical information is taken without consent and shared to fuel political attacks, the consequences are immediate and long-lasting. Families are put at risk. Children are made targets. Trust in the healthcare system is deeply damaged.

Baylor has a responsibility to every family who seeks care within its network. That responsibility does not end when a lawsuit is filed or when criminal charges are dropped. It begins with owning what happened and taking immediate steps to prevent it from happening again. The institution must investigate how this breach was allowed to occur. It must notify any families whose records may have been accessed. It must make public the steps it is taking to fix its training and oversight protocols so that no resident or staff member can exploit patient records ever again.

This moment is a test of leadership. Will Baylor stand behind the families who were harmed, or hide behind legal defenses and PR statements? The courts will decide liability. But the public deserves to know whether the institution that trains future doctors takes patient privacy seriously.

Baylor must act now to repair the damage and begin restoring public trust. Anything less sends a dangerous message—that in the wrong hands, a child’s medical file can become a weapon, and the institution entrusted to protect it will look the other way.
