The Issue

Bend-La Pine School District is currently without a Sustainability Coordinator, a role that is vital to the success of our district’s sustainability plan adopted in 2021 and support of the 2019 Climate Resolution. This position was established as a cornerstone of the district’s commitment to environmental accountability and sustainable practices in our schools. The district has had staff assisting sustainability efforts since 2002 and a formal plan in place since 2010.

Now entering a second school year without a dedicated sustainability professional, the district’s progress is at risk. The responsibilities of a Sustainability Coordinator are significant and far-reaching. Responsibilities such as implementing composting programs, conducting waste audits, supporting energy efficiency in new buildings, and coordinating student-led environmental clubs have fallen to already overextended teachers, students, and volunteers. This has led to fragmented and inconsistent efforts and no one to follow through on the plan strategies and reporting.

A full-time, well-supported Sustainability Coordinator is essential to ensure accountability across departments, manage district-wide initiatives, and foster a culture of environmental stewardship. To attract and retain a qualified professional, this role must be appropriately staffed, and fairly compensated.

By signing this petition, you are urging the district to prioritize filling this vital position. Doing so will reaffirm our commitment to sustainability, ensure cohesive and effective environmental practices, and help our schools lead by example.
