The Issue

In June 2021, I launched a petition in response to the closure of Los Angeles County Animal Pounds to the public and the abandonment of a 15-year-old dog named Mimi. Despite facing obstacles, including a policy requiring online selection and appointments for adoption, I persevered and successfully adopted Mimi. My experience fueled a commitment to advocate for the reopening of the shelters, receiving support from some staff members.

As of January 2023, while there has been some progress, the pounds still limit adopters to afternoon appointments and continue to euthanize a significant number of animals. The statistics reveal the pressing need for extended operational hours, with over 12,000 animals taken in and 4,500 euthanized within six months. This petition, inspired by Mimi's story and passing, aims to restore full access to Los Angeles County Animal Pounds and promote accountability within the system.

Update 2024
This successful petition led to the reopening of Los Angeles County Animal Pounds to the public. However, we must continue to advocate for the animals in these facilities, as there is a possibility that they may try to restrict access again and revert to an appointment system. The petition serves as a tool for ongoing advocacy to ensure that every animal in their care receives the attention and care they deserve. Previously, the system required people to preview animals online and set appointments, leading to long wait times and challenges. This petition also aims to save the lives of dogs or cats that may not be receiving the necessary attention. If you are aware of any abuses by the LA County animal control services, please contact me at TheodoreTrentman@gmail.com. Your support and involvement are crucial in making a difference for these animals in need.

2025
The pounds continue to kill healthy animals so we use our petition to continue to inform community members of urgent animal matters in Southern California. As Facebook and Instagram continue to hide networkers posts, we continue to reach animal lovers directly. Please sign to help the helpless animals.
