Improve the safety of scammonden bridge due to the amount of suicides.

Hello my name is Olivia Yarrow. I am a student mental health nurse, currently in my third year of the degree.

In 2017 there were 6,213 suicides in the UK and within the Republic of Ireland. However 5,821 suicides were registered in the UK and 392 occurred in the Republic of Ireland.
Unfortunately in the UK men remain three times as likely to take their own lives than women.

As you can see these statistics are astonishing. Increases of suicides involving individuals jumping off scammondem bridge over the M62 have increased dramatically. It was only today that an individual lost their life from jumping from the bridge. Something needs to be put in place to prevent the individuals from jumping to their death. This could include messages on the bridge to distract the individual from jumping or a safety mechanism so the invidual is unable to jump. As the bridge is situated above a motor way it is important that more safety procedures are put in place to protect ongoing traffic on the motor way from colliding with people jumping off the bridge which may cause fatal crashes on the motor way causing people to be injured and to lose their lives.

More education needs to be given to individuals surrounding signs of suicide. I am willing to provide a poster which could be published to to public places to help prevent someone from taking their own life. Another example may include a talk with taxi drivers to be aware of why some people may want to be taken to the bridge and if possible maybe ask why they want to go and know which service to call.

This could be your husband, wife, girlfriend, boyfriend, daughter, son, family member or friend. We need to come together to make a difference  no matter how big or small.

A problem shared maybe a problem solved.
