The Issue

The flags of England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, and the Union Jack are not “symbols of hate.” They are national symbols—representing our shared history, culture, and identity. They belong to all of us.

Yet, increasingly, these flags are being reported to councils or even to the police as “offensive” or “intimidating.” Worse still, authorities often act on these complaints—removing flags, threatening fines, or treating ordinary people as if pride in their nation is something sinister.

This cannot continue.

National symbols should never be silenced simply because a group—large or small—claim to be “offended” or claim to act on behalf of others’ supposed offence.

The right to fly the flag of your country should be untouchable—just as it is in free nations across the world.

We call for clear legal protection to ensure that the display of our national and regional flags cannot be treated as a hate symbol, an act of intimidation, or an offence.

Furthermore, in cases where flags are considered for removal due to other circumstances, authorities must act consistently with precedent.
