Portland, OREGON (8/15/2022)
Today. While Oregon has no operating nuclear plant, voters voted against it after the 1979 meltdown at Three Mile Island, we do store its deadly radioactive materials:
Oregon's radioactive garbage is at the Trojan Park along Route-30 in 34 (yes thirty-four) dry canisters that are two-stories high
on the Columbia River
AND the Cascadia Earthquake Fault
AND where the local, high school cross-country teams run their meets each year.
What are we thinking?
Oh. We aren't.
Out of sight; out of mind, right?
So ludicrous. This is why I want you to know.
Before my diagnosis of a brain tumor in 2012, I did not know about the long-term effects of being exposed to ionizing radiation.
Now, I do.
Now, I want you to know, too.
And will someone tell the local high schools to find another, cross-country course - please?!
I will, but coming from a concerned parent of a runner probably will be heard. Besides, I am headed to D.C. during the XC season.
