Tell Herbert Kohler not to destroy an entire ecosystem for his 5th Wisconsin golf course.
The Issue
Herbert V. Kohler, Jr. has proposed building a golf course in a pristine forest and sensitive environmental corridor in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin. This is one of the most pristine properties on the western shores of Lake Michigan. A golf course would have a severe impact on the surrounding environment. Trees, wetlands, dunes, wildlife habitats, and vegetation will be destroyed. Kohler also wants to take acres of state owned land from Kohler-Andrae State Park for an entrance to his golf course along with utilizing the state park entrance. As this may be one of the last natural areas along Lake Michigan, we are asking Kohler to re-consider his proposed golf course. Please add your voice and let Mr. Kohler know that this proposed golf course is environmentally irresponsible.
TO: Herbert V. Kohler, Jr.
We are asking you not to destroy an ecosystem for your 5th Sheboygan County golf course.
We ask that you do not deplete our resources for your profit.
The destruction of 247 acres will affect the air, water and ecological balance not only within your property, but also in Kohler-Andrae State Park and the communities surrounding it.
We request you reconsider your proposal in order to honor the legacy of your grandfather who left this land to recognize the contributions of John Michael Kohler and his family to the conservation of Wisconsin’s natural resources.
Your company continually states it is a steward of the environment. We encourage you to prove this by preserving this environment and sensitive environmental corridor.
Your proposal changes the complete nature of this land.
The proposed golf course will:
· Deplete the shallow aquifer causing our wells to go dry as they have in Mosel due to Whistling Straits water consumption.
· Destroy interdunal wetlands and swales created from over 5000 years of Lake Michigan activity which are protected in Door County and part of our ecological heritage.
· Deforest more than 50% of the 247 acres.
· Destroy a natural fly over area for hundreds of bird species.
· Destroy the habitat for hundreds of species of wildlife and plant life, including rare and endangered species.
· Dig up the burial and habitation sites of early peoples from 3900 B.C.
· Eliminate wetlands of high functional value which filter run off of toxins into our Black River and Lake Michigan
· Leach pesticides into the groundwater and endanger the community with pesticide drift
· Commercialize the entrance to Wisconsin’s much loved Kohler-Andrae Park by building a rotary and taking acres of OUR state park land for your private use.
We urge you to protect and preserve this pristine woodland along the Great Lake Michigan shore. Let it be acknowledged as your greatest accomplishment for generations to come.
