Hello! If you haven't written the Board of Education to express your opinion AGAINST their decision to build a cell tower at Shady Side Elementary School, I encourage you to please do so. Your voice matters! The more people they hear from - the better our chance is to block this from happening. Your email/letter needs to be sent to the Board before September 6th. On September 6th, the Board will vote to either approve or reject Milestone Communications' application to erect the tower behind the playground at the school. The September 6th Board meeting is scheduled to start at 10 AM. It will be held at the Dr. Carol S. Parham Administration Building (2644 Riva Road) and it is open to the public. Please cc all Board members and representatives of Milestone Communications in your email. Their emails are listed below. To this end, we have terminated an agreement with Milestone Communications to place future cell phone towers on school system properties. We heard your concerns about the potential impact of cell phone towers on student health, questions about the site selection process, opportunities for community engagement and other issues. Therefore, we believe this decision is in the best interest of our schools, students and families. Milestone Communications, a Virginia-based firm, will continue to manage existing tower locations at seven sites. PGCPS has not made a decision regarding future agreements with telecommunications providers. We appreciate your continued input and support in ensuring healthy learning environments for all students. Sincerely, Dr. Kevin M. Maxwell Chief Executive Officer Also, If you haven't had a chance to read it, below is the link to the recent opinion section published in the Capital Gazette. It can be reasoned that the paper took both sides into account and came to the most obvious conclusion: "Perhaps the school system should at least consider redoing its deal with Milestone to rule out towers at elementary schools and limit them to the sort of larger facilities where they have been built so far." http://www.capitalgazette.com/opinion/ac-ce-our-say-20170827-story.html Please watch the community members testimony from the last School Board Meeting to learn more: https://youtu.be/iMM9pl_V_mc?t=54m12s And don't forget to join our Facebook Page for more updates! https://www.facebook.com/groups/1273801702732714/
