POSITIVE NEWS BUT WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP – POSSIBLE HERITAGE PROTECTION FOR COOLOONGATTA ROAD, CAMB

We locals wanted to let you know that there have been some further developments in our endeavours to stop the demolition of these lovely garden flats and the loss of these affordable homes in Camberwell.

Two Heritage Studies have now confirmed what we locals felt compelled to investigate, that the flats are actually important, high quality, architectural examples of mid-century modern Apartments. 

They were designed by renowned architects Mussen Mackay & Potter who worked alongside the iconic Robin Boyd and Roy Grounds.  Some of Mussen Mackay & Potter’s work has already been protected, namely the iconic Hosies Hotel in Melbourne’s CBD.  

This garden setting was purpose built by the owners, the Gilmour Family at a time when there was special interest in a pioneering typology of garden flats.  The Gilmours lived on site amongst their Tenants which is consistent with the character and humility of Mr. Gilmour who had a great concern for people with disadvantaged lives.  

The Heritage Reports by highly regarded heritage experts, who specialise in post-World War II architecture confirm that the flats were early examples of these kinds of Apartment developments in Melbourne and should be protected. 

We are very excited to bring you this news and will keep you updated as to what is going to happen next. 

Please continue to help us try and ensure that these well designed, affordable homes are not demolished just for the sake of profit.  

We were delighted that on 4th February 2021 Boroondara Council refused Planning Application PP20/0506 providing thirteen reasons of refusal.

With regard to possible Heritage Protection, Council is considering its position and options on how to proceed.

We understand the Applicant is still pursuing Planning Application PP20/0506 and are still proposing demolition of all the current flats and the construction of 48 luxury Apartments.

It would be great if you could share this Petition with at least one person for their signature as we still need your help - the fight is NOT over yet!!!!
