HELP SAVE THE NORWOOD NEWS!
The Issue
After 38 years of serving the Bronx, N.Y., the board of directors at Montefiore Hospital and its non-profit arm Mosholu Preservation Corporation, have decided to halt publication of their non-profit newspaper, the Norwood News, a subsidiary of the nonprofit Mosholu Preservation Corporation.
The decision comes at a time when the larger daily papers and networks are cutting back on coverage of the Bronx and the current Trump administration’s impending funding cuts to the city will only exacerbate the Bronx’s ongoing issues of crime, homelessness, and mental illness. Now is not the time to discontinue the paper.
Our last print edition is expected to be published on Thursday, July 23, when our summer hiatus is normally taken. We believe that the online edition of the paper is expected to continue.
We are asking Montefiore’s board of directors to reconsider its decision because of the newspaper’s strong and longstanding connection to the community-- through the Norwood News that provides, informs, and assists residents, and listens to the communities’ concerns, in my opinion, gives much more bang for the buck than for example, a once-a-year street fair
For example, aside from highlighting the positive and uplifting work of so many Bronxites, many stories have also drawn attention to the poor housing conditions and other problems some residents are contending with, while other stories have been used in court cases relating to construction accidents and more. As such, in our opinion, the paper provides real value to residents.
By eliminating the print edition of the Norwood News; the older readers not on the internet, and children who get the paper at our local schools lose out on keeping up with their neighborhood news and events. This is in addition to former residents of The Bronx who have moved away but who still subscribe to the paper.
Despite operating with minimal resources since the pandemic in 2020, and an ever-diminishing team, on average, we manage to publish around 20 stories per week online, in addition to producing the print edition every two weeks.
In May we reported on a daily vigil held by fire victims in Belmont who were seeking more than a dozen animals left behind inside the burned-out building, which prompted animal rescuers, animal advocates and local TV news crews to join displaced residents that forced city officials to go back inside the building where two cats and a turtle were eventually rescued.
We extensively reported on the 2023 death of toddler Nicholas Feliz Domenici, who ingested fentanyl while attending a local daycare. We reported on the subsequent arrests of the operators of the daycare, as well as the trial and convictions of the owners this past March.
In January, a story about two buildings on Botanical Square that had been without gas services since a water main break in 2024, got an elected official involved that helped persuade the landlord and Con Edison to expedite repairs.
We are respectfully requesting that the paper be saved or sold to a for-profit publisher.
We are now asking former editors, writers, photographers, and readers of the paper to sign this petition to stop Montefiore Hospital to reverse this decision of discontinuing the print edition of the Norwood News.

La decisión llega en un momento en que los principales diarios y cadenas de noticias están reduciendo su cobertura del Bronx. Los inminentes recortes de fondos de la administración Trump a la ciudad no harán más que agravar problemas persistentes del distrito, como la delincuencia, la falta de vivienda y las enfermedades mentales. No es el momento de dejar de publicar el periódico.
Se prevé que la última edición impresa salga el jueves 23 de julio, fecha en la que normalmente comienza nuestro receso de verano. Entendemos que la edición digital continuará publicándose.
Solicitamos a la junta directiva de Montefiore que reconsidere su decisión debido al fuerte y duradero vínculo de Norwood News con la comunidad. El periódico presta servicios, informa, ayuda a los residentes y da voz a sus inquietudes. En ese sentido, ofrece un rendimiento mucho mayor de la inversión que, por ejemplo, una feria callejera anual.
Además de destacar la labor positiva de tantos habitantes del Bronx, Norwood News ha publicado numerosos artículos que han llamado la atención sobre las malas condiciones de vivienda y otros problemas que enfrentan los residentes. Algunos de nuestros reportajes incluso han sido utilizados en procesos judiciales relacionados con accidentes de construcción, entre otros asuntos. Todo ello demuestra el valor real que el periódico aporta a la comunidad.
Al eliminar la edición impresa de Norwood News, los lectores de mayor edad que no utilizan Internet y los niños que reciben el periódico en las escuelas locales perderán una importante fuente de información sobre las noticias y acontecimientos de sus barrios. También se verán afectados antiguos residentes del Bronx que se han mudado, pero que continúan suscritos a la publicación.
A pesar de operar con recursos mínimos desde la pandemia de 2020 y contar con un equipo cada vez más reducido, hemos logrado publicar un promedio de 20 artículos semanales en línea, además de producir una edición impresa quincenal.
En mayo informamos sobre una vigilia diaria organizada por los residentes afectados por un incendio en Belmont, quienes buscaban a más de una docena de animales que habían quedado atrapados dentro del edificio calcinado. La cobertura llevó a rescatistas de animales, defensores de los derechos de los animales y equipos de noticias locales a unirse a los residentes desplazados y presionar a las autoridades municipales para que volvieran a entrar en el edificio. Finalmente, dos gatos y una tortuga fueron rescatados.
También cubrimos extensamente la muerte, ocurrida en 2023, del pequeño Nicholas Feliz Domenici, quien ingirió fentanilo mientras asistía a una guardería local. Informamos sobre las posteriores detenciones de los responsables de la guardería, así como sobre el juicio y las condenas de sus propietarios en marzo pasado.
En enero, publicamos una noticia sobre dos edificios de Botanical Square que llevaban sin servicio de gas desde la rotura de una tubería principal en 2024. La intervención de un funcionario electo ayudó a persuadir al propietario y a Con Edison para agilizar las reparaciones.
Por todo ello, solicitamos respetuosamente que se salve Norwood News o que se considere su venta a una editorial con fines de lucro.
