Hedgehog Awareness Week excitements ...

Dear All,

I hope that you are managing the strangeness of this new world okay - whether you are a key worker having to be up and out in the face of potential risk - or at home finding out how much we all suddenly value our teachers!! No one is immune from the stress this can bring.

But we have things that can help - and a love of nature is one of the key remedies, I believe.

How are we going to get our fix of nature? Well if you are lucky enough to be able to take your dose of exercise outside, then it is there - around us - even in the heart of the city - wildlife can be found. Moments of joy - like a my friend on her morning run today through the empty streets of Oxford, having to make way for ducklings as the mother lead them along the road.

For hedgehogs fans, an important time is just around the corner - Hedgehog Awareness Week runs from Sunday 3rd May and is usually a time when we are out and about spreading the word from TV studios and in meetings and talks. Clearly this year is going to be a little different - but no less busy. So here is a list of some of the things I will be up to!

First, and possibly most exciting (for me!) is an invitation to join Chris Packham tomorrow morning (Thursday 30th April) at 0900 for his #WildMorningswithChris - on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. Tune in - send questions and, if you are so moved - send links in the comments to the petition ... it would be great to get a boost up to 750,000 from this week. It is also archived ... so if you are unable to watch live you can still see me on top of my shed (weather permitting)!

On Sunday 3rd May - official start of HAW - also sees the official launch of the British Hedgehog Preservation Society youtube site! At this time of year I am usually doing loads of talks ... so ... here is a chance to get a 45 minute talk delivered to your desk or kitchen table or tv!

Also on Sunday an interview I gave to Allan Archer of Talk Wildlife will go live - we had a very fun time chatting about hedgehogs and I have no idea what will appear ... so it will be a surprise for me too!

And ... who said anything about the day of rest? I will be also contributing to Into the Wild Festival at 3pm with a talk about ... well ... you can guess.

Later today I am being interviewed by Ashley Coates for All Things Green - not sure when it will be online, but sometime next week.

Oh - and possibly of equal excitement to the Packham gig - the amazing Robin Ince has been in touch and we will be doing something during the week ... as part of his Stay at Home Festival

There will be other bits and pieces from me through the week - and loads from the BHPS too, so please keep an eye on social media. And please - use this opportunity to spread word about the petition ... as there is talk about opening up some business, I am sure that developers will be pushing to get building again and we need to make sure that they do so only with hedgehogs (and other wildlife) in mind.

Stay safe and well - and remember - our hedgehogs ... they have been practicing social distancing for ever ... though we call it mutual avoidance!
