Next Wednesday (8th November) the 12 Newry, Mourne and Down Councillors in this picture will make a decision on this planning application. They will either agree with the recommendations of the Council's planning officer and refuse the Shore Road planning application (P/2009/1336/F), which would mean the developer has to revise his plans accordingly, and hopefully involve the community in how this uniquely beautiful site could be developed in a manner that would benefit the whole village for many generations to come. Or, they will decide to ignore the recommendation of their planning officer and the 3,000+ people who have signed this petition and approve the planning application. As SDLP Cllr Mark Murnin stated this would then "act as a catalyst to restore buildings on the shore side also" and send a clear message that planning in Newry, Mourne and Down is not a democratic process. In the context of how our elected officials best represent the values of their communities, it is worth asking two questions... One. Why did we vote for our own particular representative? Two. Does our chosen representative raise a voice for our views and if not, what shadowy forces have turned that representative into a puppet and converted their chamber of debate into a circus of debacle? Only you can answer the first question and only your elected representative, he or she in whom you placed your trust, can answer the second one. Why not lift your phone, pen or fingers and demand an answer to that question right now?
