🌊🪸 Help Protect Our Oceans and Coral Reefs 🪸🌊
The Issue
Most of us put on sunscreen without thinking twice about it. But did you know that some common sunscreen ingredients, including oxybenzone and octinoxate, have been linked to damage to coral reefs and marine ecosystems?
Every year, these chemicals wash off into the sea, where research suggests they can contribute to coral bleaching and harm young corals. Coral reefs may only cover a small part of the ocean, but they support an incredible diversity of marine life and help protect coastlines around the world.
We're calling on the Government to:
- Ban sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate
- Introduce clearer product labelling so consumers can make informed choices
- Promote reef-safe alternatives through public awareness campaigns
This isn't about stopping people from protecting their skin. It's about making it easier to choose products that protect both people and the environment.
Many people simply aren't aware that some sunscreen ingredients can affect marine life. With clearer labelling and safer alternatives, we can all make small changes that add up to a big difference.
It's not just coral reefs that are affected. These chemicals can also enter rivers, lakes and other freshwater environments through swimming, showering and wastewater, where they may impact aquatic plants, fish and other wildlife. Protecting our waterways helps safeguard biodiversity both inland and in our oceans.
If you care about our oceans, wildlife and protecting our planet for future generations, please consider supporting and sharing this petition. Every signature helps raise awareness and show that protecting marine ecosystems matters.
