The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of Saint Mary's County, respectfully request a
reevaluation and reconsideration of the zoning ordinance that
prohibits animal husbandry within residential neighborhoods in our
county.

Background:

Our county has a rich agricultural history that has defined our way of
life for generations. Families have lived off the land, tending to
animals, and providing sustenance for their loved ones.

Recently, enforcement of a zoning ordinance has threatened this
heritage, drawing an arbitrary line that permits the rearing of
livestock on certain properties, such as large farms, but prohibits it
within residential neighborhoods, including those with substantial
acreage.

Even residents with so much as chickens could potentially be affected
by this decision. It is a restriction that might set a dangerous
precedent, impacting those nurturing not only substantial livestock
but even those with a small flock in their backyards.

Our Concerns:

Preservation of Heritage: The enforcement of this ordinance undermines
our county's proud tradition of living off the land, severing our
connection to a practice that has sustained us for generations.

Lack of Consistency: The ordinance creates an inconsistent and
arbitrary boundary where one property can raise animals, while an
adjacent property, often with significant acreage, cannot.

Potential Widespread Impact: This ordinance threatens not only those
currently affected but sets a precedent that could have broader
implications for all residents with livestock or those who support our
agricultural traditions.

Our Request:

We urge County Officials, Local Government & Community Members to engage in a community
dialogue that recognizes our unique agricultural identity and seeks to
balance modern zoning needs with the preservation of our traditions. A
thoughtful reconsideration of this ordinance could protect our
heritage, embrace our community values, and uphold the rights of
residents to live off the land as generations have done before us.

By signing this petition, we collectively voice our concern and
request your immediate attention to this matter.
