I was honoured to receive an invite to a meeting with the Assistant Treasurer, Senator Arthur Sinodinos on Thursday 19th December. The Senator has been proactive behind the scenes in driving the Coalition Government’s response to the insurance situation, including bypassing the ICA & working directly with several major insurers who support industry-driven change. The afternoon meeting was very small & consisted of the Senator, Warren Entsch, Ewen Jones, & 8 other people, including me. The Senator explained the Federal initiatives: Transparency in the industry, quotes, invoices & premium calculation; An aggregated web site for premium comparison; The Australian Actuary to come to N. Qld and use actual examples to compare our costs with other areas of Australia; 3rd party commissions examined; To encourage overseas insurers to our market; The JCU investigation into flood mitigation to encompass cyclones We were also told that Suncorp had earlier admitted market failure in N. Qld.
