School Shootings are Increasing

Imagine sending your child to school, only to worry every day if they'll come home safely. Recent tragedies, like the heartbreaking school shooting in Georgia, show just how urgently we need better security.  Schools should be safe havens for learning, growth, and friendship, not places where students and teachers fear for their lives.

Across America, the threat of school shootings is a tragic reality.  From 2000 to today, more than 417 school shootings have occurred, affecting families across the country.  And the rate is increasing!  (see table from the Washington Post database on school shootings below)

We need to consider metal detectors

This petition calls for us to consider installing metal detectors in schools as a first line of defense against weapons entering our classrooms.  It’s a simple but effective measure to protect our children and the educators who dedicate their lives to helping them grow.  Metal detectors have been used effectively in airports, government buildings, and other public spaces to prevent violence and save lives - why should schools be any different?
