The Issue
My name is Allen Brown Jr. In November 2012, I was sentenced to 75 years in prison for armed robbery and aggravated battery. I was 24 years old. An adult in age but still juvenile in maturity; an emerging adult not developed beyond the impulsiveness of youth. While I take full responsibility for my actions, I believe my sentence is far too excessive, especially compared to my accomplice who received only 6 years. This disproportionate sentence has had a devastating impact on my family, depriving my children – including my young daughter – of a father's love and support. My elderly mother also needs my help and care, and my absence has left a void in my community.
Imprisoning people for such lengthy periods not only tears families apart but also burdens taxpayers. Overcrowded prisons waste resources that could be better spent on education and social programs that address the root causes of crime.
Illinois' Resentencing Initiative offers hope to people like me who've turned their lives around. I urge the State's Attorney to consider my case for resentencing.
Since being incarcerated, I've dedicated myself to personal growth and rehabilitation. I've completed programs in anger management, substance abuse, and parenting. I've also taken journalism classes to develop new skills. In addition, I've been engaged in mental health treatment and completed a behavior modification program centered around cognitive behavioral and dialectical behavioral therapy. As a member of the resident representative committee, I've advocated for my fellow inmates and served as a mentor.
People change over time, and my growth and transformation have been positive. I'm no longer the person I was when I made those mistakes. I'm no longer a threat to society, and I deserve a second chance to contribute positively to the world and heal the wounds I've caused my family – and myself.
If you believe that people deserve a chance at redemption and that our criminal justice system should prioritize rehabilitation over excessive punishment, please sign and share this petition. Your support could encourage the prosecutor to review my case and advocate for a sentence reduction. You can learn more about resentencing at spac.illinois.gov.
Let's show the world that I deserve a second c
hance.
