(Spanish below) On August 10, 2026, life changed drastically for thousands in Colombia as a devastating earthquake shook the country to its core. Families are torn apart, with many losing loved ones, their homes, and essential lifelines such as water and electricity. The destruction has left entire communities in despair, their future uncertain, and their immediate needs overwhelming.

This initiative is inspired by Canada's humanitarian leadership following Haiti's devastating 2010 earthquake. Since that disaster, Canada has contributed $1.5 billion in humanitarian and development assistance to Haiti. Within two days of the January 12, 2010 earthquake, Canada established the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund, matching donations made by Canadians. Seven days later, Canada announced an additional $80 million in humanitarian assistance, bringing its total response to up to $135 million. Haiti benefited from the advocacy of prominent champions, including Governor General Michaëlle Jean. Today, we may not have a Michaëlle Jean speaking on Colombia's behalf, but we do have you, our elected representatives and community leaders.

We hope Canada will demonstrate similar leadership and solidarity in supporting the people of Colombia during this time of need. Today, Canada's Latin American and Hispanic community, numbering more than one million people, respectfully ask that our MPs:

1) Publicly support Canada's commitment to assisting Colombia following the August 10 earthquake ;
1) Share this initiative with your constituents and networks;
2) Encourage the Government of Canada to provide humanitarian and development assistance for Colombia; and
3) Meet with representatives of the Colombian and Latin American communities to discuss how Canada can contribute to relief, recovery, and long-term development efforts.

Inspirados por el liderazgo humanitario de Canadá tras el terremoto de Haití en 2010, cuando aportó más de $1.5 mil millones en ayuda y movilizó hasta $135 millones en asistencia inmediata, solicitamos una respuesta similar para Colombia.
