Petition updateHelp Ensure Protection for Climate Change Refugees (like Freya, Wally and Thor)Another Walrus needing our protection.

It may not have escaped your awareness that we have recently seen another walrus in our UK waters... being spotted most recently in the Solent where the walrus (who has been given the name "Thor") hauled out to rest on a beach.

Once again BDMLR volunteers and the Coastgurad were on hand to create a cordon and minimise disturbance of the animal whilst it slept.

What do we know?  Well we know from Lori our expert in Alaska (liaising with ourselves at BDMLR and The Seal Research Trust), that this one is an adult (longer tusks being just one indicator of this). We have yet to 100% confirm gender, but we do know it is underweight (very thin)... and so it will be all the more important to allow it to rest if it hauls out on our shores again.

BDMLR have a fuller statement and advice regarding this latest walrus which can be found HERE.

In the meantime we continue to share (and re share) this "Freya" petition - our aim being to gain a large enough number of signatures to add real weight to our conversations with the Norwegian Directorate of Fisheries (and others).

Even though we are four months since the death of Freya, she has not been forgotten, and gaining momentum for legislative changes can take time so please do continue to share this petition and keep awareness of the need for protection of these animals on the agenda.

With a shift in climate, we are going to see more walrus needing our help as they become displaced and "out of habitat"... and the more we can educate, motivate and legislate to keep them from harm the better.

Thank you for your support so far.
