Updated: Inquiry into Wildlife Roadstrike in Victoria
On Monday, 1st September, I, along with three fellow wildlife rescuers and carers, had the honour of being invited to give evidence at Parliament House in relation to the Inquiry into Wildlife Roadstrike in Victoria.
In my statement, I spoke about the daily devastation our wildlife face on Wellington Road. I presented the data I’ve been recording, referred to the petition, and highlighted the urgent need for Virtual Fencing, VMS signage, and speed reductions from dusk to dawn. I also spoke about the ongoing trauma we face as wildlife rescuers, particularly with the alarming rise in roadstrikes we are witnessing in recent times.
We felt very supported by the Chair and Committee Members, and we remain hopeful that this Inquiry will lead to real, lasting change. The lives of our wildlife are in peril. With overdevelopment continuing to destroy their habitat, this issue will not resolve itself without intervention.
A heartfelt thank you goes to MP Georgie Purcell for chairing this Inquiry and for her ongoing support. She is deeply aware of the horrors we face on Wellington Road.
