No pay for teachers charged with rape/ child pornography
The Issue
Hello everyone, my name is Haile Paradis and I am a senior at BMC Durfee High School. As some of you may know within the month of May, two teachers from Durfee were put on paid administrative leave after facing charges like possesion of child pornography, two counts of rape of a child aggravated by age difference, and one count of rape of a child aggravated by his status as a mandatory reporter... As a student I personally will not settle for this and students should feel safe with their teachers at all times, by doing this students feel incredibly uncomfortable and confused. For the safety of the students I believe that these two teachers and any teacher who abuses their responsiblity as a mandated reporter should not receive paid leave during their suspension. Instead, I believe that their pay should be paused until AFTER their trials, if a teacher is proven innocent then they will receive pay and if a teacher is guilty they will not receive pay. We should not reward these teachers with a salary. I understand that I can not change laws, but I am looking for the next contract negotiation between the School Committee and the Teachers' Union to reevaluate the terms in which they pay teachers who are under investigation due to misconduct with children/ students. We are looking for students to feel safe at school, not uncomfortable and scared. There needs to be more precautions in place to prevent these incidents from happening in the future.

I believe that we as Hilltoppers deserve justice, we are putting our trust in these mandated reporters to do their jobs correctly and responsibly. We need change!
