Support a Slow Street network in Oak Park!
The Issue
The Oak Park Transportation Commission has proposed that the Village implement ‘Slow Streets,’ or local-traffic-only streets, to enable physical distancing for the duration of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kenilworth, Thomas, Van Buren, and Harvey are the streets under consideration for a pilot. While Slow Streets reduce through traffic, residents and delivery vehicles will still be permitted to drive and park on these streets. Slow Streets will:
- Make walking and riding safer for everyone, especially children, families, and people with disabilities
- Create space for the dramatic uptick in cycling, walking, running, scooting, rollerblading, and skateboarding that is happening during the pandemic
- Not involve any policing
- Involve a minimal one-time set-up expense
- Connect to local business districts such as Downtown Oak Park and the Harrison Arts District
If you support Slow Streets, please let the Village know before the July 6th Board meeting, when this will be decided upon! We will share your signature here with the Village Board. Public comments can also be directed to board@oak-park.us, and you can find out more at Bike Walk Oak Park’s Facebook page or by emailing bikewalkoakpark@gmail.com
