This time of year I dread who we might spot on the road. This morning we saw our 1st dead hedgehog, run over by every vehicle in front of us and no doubt every vehicle behind.

The Problem

Habitat Loss and Fragmentation: Roads and housing developments disrupt and destroy hedgehog habitats. Hedgehogs need interconnected areas to find food, mates, and nesting spots. Roads become barriers that disrupt their natural movement.

Direct Mortality (Roadkill): The biggest immediate threat is from road traffic. Thousands of hedgehogs are killed on UK roads annually. Hedgehogs have poor road sense and tend to curl up when threatened, making them especially vulnerable.

Isolation and Population Decline: Roads fragment populations, isolating groups of hedgehogs. Isolated populations can't find enough mates for healthy breeding, face greater competition for limited resources, and become more vulnerable to localized extinction.

Those are the problems but what are the solutions ?

Hedgehog Highways: Creating underpasses, tunnels, and specifically designed "hedgehog holes" at the base of fences and walls allows hedgehogs to travel safely between areas.

Wildlife-Friendly Development: Planning new housing and roads with hedgehog corridors and green spaces in mind. Planting hedgerows and leaving wild patches creates valuable habitat.

Road Awareness Campaigns: Educating drivers in hedgehog-prone areas about reducing speeds at night and being mindful can decrease roadkill. Encouraging the reporting of roadkill helps conservationists better target mitigation efforts.

Support for Hedgehog Rescue and Rehabilitation: Donating to and volunteering with hedgehog charities enables the rescue and rehabilitation of injured hedgehogs.

How You Can Help:

Create a Hedgehog-Friendly Garden: Make your garden permeable with gaps in boundaries and provide safe nesting places (leaf piles, log piles).

Be a Hedgehog-Savvy Driver: Especially at night, slow down and be observant of wildlife in hedgehog-prone areas.

Spread Awareness: Encourage others to take steps to protect hedgehogs and share information on responsible development practices.

Finally sign my other hedgehog petition to make hedgehog surveys and mitigation measures  compulsory for all new developments in the UK https://petition.parliament.uk/petitions/658072

Thank you, hedgehog champions

Maggie
