A Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine research team reports that the necessity, benefits and risks of using gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) should be considered for each examination. In a commentary published in the Journal of the American College of Radiology, the team stated that the benefit-to-risk ratio is high, however each study should be weighted according to radiation exposure and MRI studies that require the use of GBCAs should be “carefully triaged to minimize any associated risks, especially for patients who will likely require multiple MR scans during their lifetime, pregnant women, children and patients with known sensitivity to contrast agents”. They recommended that the repeated use of GBCA imaging studies should be minimized when possible, especially for studies that are closely spaced in time.
