From January 2010 to June 2015, 44 patients with glioblastomas were studied to determine if radiation therapy accelerated accumulation of gadolinium in the brain from the use of contrasted MRIs. Patients underwent both pre- and post-radiation brain MRIs and the images were analyzed. It was discovered that the R1 values (a measure of gadolinium accumulation) were significantly increased after radiation therapy and areas receiving higher doses of radiation showed more accumulation than areas which received lower doses. The increase in gadolinium accumulation is believed to be the result of damage incurred to the blood-brain barrier from radiotherapy. The results of this study by Dr. Lim from the Seoul National University College of Medicine in Seoul, Korea were published on Feb. 14, 2018 in the journal, PLoS One.
