Healthcare and Education Students Deserve Minimum Wage

The issue

Healthcare and Education students are required to meet hundreds of hours of unpaid placement to obtain registration from their governing bodies. Often these students are forced to make impossible decisions and work inhumane hours in order to survive.

In predominantly female industries and care giver roles, this is considered normal. However, in male dominated industry such as Plumbing, Mechanics, Hospitality and Carpentry, the students are offered “apprenticeships” and provided with the opportunity to grow and develop their skills while receiving benefits of employment.

Healthcare and Education are the backbones of society and by providing the bare minimum such as nursing and teaching apprenticeships, this will deeply impact industry staffing shortages, quality of education and a nation wide improvement in healthcare and education outcomes.

It is time to address this failure of society that directly influences the gender pay gap NOW to improve outcomes nationwide.
