A nurse with a CBE has been appointed at the new governments safe pair of hands. She has a salary that is five times that of a junior doctor working their butt off on the NHS front line. It is fascinating that she doesn't have experience in patient safety and isn't a whistleblower. Moreover, she has never dealt with issues concerning whistleblowing. What is interesting is that many years ago, I wrote to the DH to suggest that they hire patient safety expert Prof Steve Bolsin. For the public, he would have the ideal pedigree being the leader of the pack in clinical governance. The fact the CQC did not hire him tells us many things. It tells us really that the system we have doesn't really wish to change. The current Tsar is of course one of those cosmetic positions. Its a bit like the patient safety Tsar who once admitted to me that he had no powers to handle patient safety issues on the shop floor. This puzzled me, what was he there for then?. Perhaps its great to look pretty with a pretty title appearing on versions of the glitzy government propaganda press releases. Its interesting this Tsar was once involved with Whipps Cross Hospital, a place of scandal, neglect and mayhem. Anyway, its sad really that the now defunct Patients First lacked the knowledge or the ability to demand that the public have a right to good care. To do that one must stop the hiring of ineffective inexperienced people in positions of power at great cost to the public purse. Its not in the interest of the public to be served by those biased towards protecting the governments reputation. As the public will find, patient safety will not improve with this Tsar at the CQC.
