I was once told about the way the establishment neutralised challenges to them. A GMC committee member explained it to me. Those challenging to the interests of the establishment are settled in positions of power with high salaries. Their loyalty to their principles disappear. Apparently, their loyalty starts to lie with their pay masters. There is no doubt these tricks have been tried on me over the years. A case of join us for the greater good. The problem with selling your soul for a few gold coins and status is that you lose your identity. If everyone looks around them, they will find many whistleblowers have taken up highly paid jobs on the pretence of changing patient safety. While there is a view that status and money is important in life - one must always remember that patient campaigners and whistleblowers are the only way patient safety is challenged for the better. If these challenges are neutralised, patient safety and the much needed debates disappear. There is an absence of feedback and accountability. I have only seen loyalty to their cause from the Thyroid and disability campaigners who never let go of their cause and refuse to be purchased for a few gold coins. I have learned from them and admired them greatly. The rest are usually happy to sell themselves to the establishment so that their cases get some attention and they feel some kind of self importance. You don't get a better world by joining hands with unethical people. I guess in life we have choices - to stand by our principles or to sell out. I know the reasons I have never accepted any establishment offer. I never did medicine to join hands with wrong people. The greater good is only served by standing by who you are and what you believe in. It's important for everyone to understand this especially campaigners.
