Long ago Professor Jarman dumped our whistleblowing paper because we insisted on criticising the establishment. Our stance did not suit his aim.
Sir Jar is the architect of the HMSR scores and member of Dr Foster. If you look up Waltham Forrest and some of Fosters past employees, one can assess what kind of outfit this is. Criticised by the audit commission some years ago but yet Dr Foster continues to market their glitzy data for consumption by the public. The HMSR scores have been used to measure death rates and bad publicity has been generated everywhere for the NHS.
Sir Jar positioned himself as patients friend but doesn't take well to criticism. Long ago, I questioned his brand of statistics. It worried me that he admitted in an email to me that deaths by the next Dr Shipman could not be detected by these statistics. The statistics could not spot high death rate on specific wards either. Yet these statistics were flaunted in the Mid Staffs Inquiry . I was puzzled by its use as I felt it was misleading the public.
While my concerns over these issues were overlooked, there is a letter from me to Norman Lamb outlining the serious problems in accuracy. Sadly, Foster had ensured the world of patients worshipped the floor they walked on. Perhaps it was Sir Jars professor title and ex BMA president status that made people believe without question.
As we fast forward history, we see that the two consultants on our paper joined hands with Sir Jar instead of challenging his methodology. This is despite the position Sir Jar took in running off from our paper. Again we find senior figures joining hands with someone because its convenient. They joined hands on Cure The NHS website for Patients First. I guess no one was concerned about the accuracy of statistics peddled by Sir Jar or perhaps it was convenient to overlook evidence for the sake of the greater picture.
Sadly for them, evidence was to demonstrate the truth. HMSR has been discredited and I wonder where the two senior whistleblowing consultants stand ....on the side of science and the truth or the side of fame, status and safety in numbers. No doubt Sir Jar will run around persuading the public of his brand of calculations.
We owe the public the truth....Dr Foster and Sir Jar owed the public information about the limitation of their statistics. Hospitals and good staff do not need scrutiny when they do their job well. Patients do not deserve their good hospitals to be discredited unfairly. Unfair bad publicity is a threat to patient safety as it results in a drop in patient compliance and confidence. There is much I can say of Dr Foster and I truly hope all the money they have made from the NHS is donated to patient safety.
