Dear Friends! AMAZING News!! Professor Tim Noakes was today found innocent of all charges! This is his second acquittal by S. African authorities; the first was in April 2017, which was then appealed. As you know, the charges were always hard to believe: Prof. Noakes was accused of endangering the public and of “unprofessional conduct" for giving “unconventional” advice to a breastfeeding mother, by tweeting to her that she could safely wean her child on to a low-carb, high-fat diet. For this lone tweet in February 2014, Prof. Noakes endured more than 4 years of hearings (all at his own expense), with the threat that his medical license would be taken away. If you want to read the official, unanimous (13-0) decision, it is here: https://www.scribd.com/document/381341405/Tim-Noakes (Full disclosure: I traveled to S. Africa to testify on Tim's behalf in Oct 2016: http://foodmed.net/2016/10/noakes-trial-nina-teicholz-explodes-fat-bombs/) As we know, the battle was really an effort to silence his voice and to keep him from speaking out about the science of low-carb. Now that it's over, many thanks to the nearly 43,000 of you who signed the petition in his defense. It is a great day for Tim Noakes and a great day for science! The larger story behind the Tim Noakes trial is truly alarming: it reveals that the S. African Dietitian's Association, together with university professors and S. African Medical authorities, had been making a “plan” to bring him down even before the tweet-accusation. http://foodmed.net/2018/03/noakes-will-academic-mobsters-silence-him/ Right now, there are similar efforts worldwide to silence the science of low-carbohydrate diets, by targeting health professionals like Noakes, by attempting to censor media such as the film The Magic Pill, and by actively ignoring the science. This is why Dr. Sarah Hallberg and I are working with The Nutrition Coalition, a group which aims of ensuring that nutrition guidelines around the world are evidence-based. We want a future where the US Dietary Guidelines -- and other guidelines globally — reflect the best and most rigorous science and are not influenced by special interests or a bias for the status-quo. Please join us in this fight by taking a moment to sign up for our newsletter so that we can stay in touch with you about food politics—the real news on nutrition science—and our efforts to bring good science to policy. And please consider a donation--since we accept no industry money, we rely entirely on the generosity of passionate people like you. Newsletter: https://www.nutritioncoalition.us/newsletter Donation: https://www.nutritioncoalition.us/donate/ We made a difference when we delivered hundreds of pages--with tens of thousands of signatures—to the offices of the S. African Health Authorities. They must have known that they would end up on the wrong side of history if they ruled against Tim Noakes. We aim to continue to make a difference and stand up for the science. That said, today, Friday June 8th, is Professor Noakes’ Day. Please head to social media to congratulate him!! All the best, Nina Teicholz p.s.
