Have Ellie Kill Abby in HBO's The Last of Us

The Issue

Ellie's last-second decision to spare Abby's life instead of killing her for brutally murdering Joel in The Last of Us, Part II was very disappointing for many fans of the game. It robbed them and Ellie of the catharsis, closure, and justice for Joel that they would have gotten had Abby died. Because of this, the personal sacrifices Ellie made, the blood she shed looking for Abby, the death of Jesse and the wounding of Tommy at Abby's hands were all in vain. It's also rather out of character for Ellie to arbitrarily let her surrogate father's killer live after killing so many people in her search for her.

The game would still have ended with her returning to an empty home and being unable to play the guitar due to her missing fingers, but at least with Abby dead, Ellie would have had one consolation and tangible resolution for her grief and trauma. Abby herself is a widely disliked character. The gameplay from her perspective as well as her character development and bond with Lev and Yara doesn't ingratiate her to many fans or absolve her of her actions.

The showrunners of HBO's live action television adaptation of The Last of Us have a unique opportunity to give fans the ending that many desired by having Ellie kill Abby, as was originally intended by the game's developers. This will ensure that justice for Joel is served, Ellie remains narratively consistent and gets the actual closure and resolution she needs, and her actions and sacrifices aren't for nothing.
