A quieter weekend at Campaign HQ, with the bank holiday and because I'm still not feeling great; but the campaign continues! I got a shout out on BBC Lancashire Radio' Sunday morning show from my great friend Ted Robbins and he told his listeners about my campaign which was great. In the afternoon I went to Kingsgate Shopping Centre in Huddersfield, with a few members of Honley Male Voice Choir, to help them promote their concert with Nicholas McCarthy. They are doing a great job supporting my campaign and I was pleased to talk to some people about the progress. Steven, their Musical Director, has shared my story with lots of his friends and he took my photo as a celebrity from Lancashire! I was also really pleased that Nicholas tweeted me and has also shared my campaign link. I'm looking forward to meeting him.
Unfortunately, there's still quite a bit of ignorance about what the 'Changing Places' campaign is all about. Many people don't appreciate the need for a spacious room with an adult size bed and hoist for those like me who can't get out of our wheelchairs without assistance or use a 'normal' toilet or even a 'disabled' toilet with additional handles and supports. My mum read to me part of an entry which she made in her diary in 1997, when I was just 2 years old. She recognised, even then, that changing facilities for children and adults were seriously lacking. And now, 20 years on, the situation is still much the same! However I know from the many thousands of comments (530 pages so far!) on my petition, that many people, including hundreds of parents and carers, are all too familiar with my situation.
Today I contacted the BBC One Show to tell them about my story and I hope they will feature it when they do a programme about disabled access on public transport soon. I've also emailed a few more newspapers in the hope that they will want to feature my campaign. My aunty visited this afternoon and I was delighted with the car stickers which she has produced for me. I've stuck the first one I on my wheelchair and my mum and stepdad have got them on their cars too already!
Well that's it for today... 42,000 and still counting. Let's try and reach 50,000 by the end of the week!
Thanks
Zack
