Save Latin Village

The Issue

The Latin Village in North London is the UK's second-largest Latin Quarter housed in a Transport of London (TfL) building. The Mayor of London is the Chairman of TfL.

Children and young people from ethnic minority backgrounds rely on the Latin Village to enjoy a sense of community, belonging, and to enjoy their culture, particularly in a scarcity of youth centres across the country.

Latin Village attracts visitors from around the world because of its originality in character.

The Latin Village provides a sense of belonging, to the local migrant community. In an area once cited as having the most ethnically diverse postcode in the UK and Western Europe.

As well as drawing regular visitors from the Latin American community and many members of all communities from all over London and beyond, it is a very important community hub for many people. It is also a registered community asset and a place where diversity and inclusion are celebrated.

Please support the Community Plan that has planning permission to restore the Edwardian Wards Corner which is a locally listed building due to its special architectural and historical interest.

The Decision Makers

Boris Johnson
Prime Minister
Responded
Dear Petitioner Re: Wards Corner, High Road, Tottenham N15 Thank you for the petition submitted on the change.org website about the proposed relocation of the Pueblito Paisa. London Underground (LU) owns the former Wards Department Store building, which is located above the ticket hall of Seven Sisters station and houses the Pueblito Paisa. The current tenant leases market space to traders directly. We are aware that Haringey Council has had aspirations to regenerate the area since 2004 and, to that end, has been promoting a scheme that will transform the area. LU supports this ambition and has been working with the Council to deliver it, although no decisions have yet been made regarding the future of the Wards Department Store building. There are currently two extant planning permissions for this site and Transport for London (TfL) is in discussions with both parties to ensure that any decision made to implement either of them delivers the best value for those working in, living in and visiting the area, and also protects the infrastructure of the station. It should be noted that the Mayor decided in 2012, that the planning application submitted by Grainger plc, the borough’s development partner, would be subject to a legal obligation on Grainger to provide financial support to help the small businesses to relocate temporarily while Wards Corner is regenerated. Grainger is still in the process of undertaking the land assembly necessary to deliver its scheme. However, this relocation would only be temporary and the intention is that those businesses in the Pueblito Paisa will move back to Wards Corner once the works are complete.
