The Earth is thirsty! Fresh Water in Danger

Проблема

1. About us

We are an association of 5 schools in 5 European countries:

Liceul Tehnologic "Mihai Eminescu", Dumbraveni, Romanija

Sehit Ali Aksoy Ortaokulu, Manisa, Turkey

Rīgas 22. vidusskola, Riga (Latvia)

Agrupamento de Escolas de Samora Correia, Samora Correia, Portugal

Istituto Comprensivo G. Pierluigi, Palestrina, Italy

We are carrying out a European "Erasmus +" project entitled "Hand to Hand - Together in Europe". In our project, we jointly carry out a number of activities related to the care of the environment.

2. What are our objectives with this initiative?

A. To raise the awareness of as many people as possible of the environmental problems caused by lack of drinking water.

B. Freshwater—the stuff we drink, bathe in, irrigate our farm fields with—is incredibly rare.

Many places in the world are getting drier—not just because of climate change but also because of the demands of irrigation and industry. Lake Chad has shrunk to one-twentieth of its size in 1960.28 The Aral Sea is about gone. The Colorado River no longer reaches the sea in the dry season. Just 10 percent of the Mesopotamian marshlands are left. Worldwide, some 2–3 billion people could face acute freshwater shortages by 2020, which translates into one person in three, compared with one in ten today. About twenty countries are now water-stressed; by 2020 there will be more than forty. Asia, sub-Saharan Africa, and even the Mediterranean will be the most affected regions. For the developing world as a whole, the shortage could average 15–20 percent, with some already tense spots, like the Middle East, much worse off.

Due to geography, climate, engineering, regulation, and competition for resources, some regions seem relatively flush with freshwater, while others face drought and debilitating pollution. In much of the developing world, clean water is either hard to come by or a commodity that requires laborious work or significant currency to obtain.

Water scarcity can be a result of two mechanisms: physical (absolute) water scarcity and economic water scarcity, where physical water scarcity is a result of inadequate natural water resources to supply a region's demand, and economic water scarcity is a result of poor management of the sufficient available water resources.

How to save water? What can we do?

1. Turn off the taps

Don't let your water consumption run out of control. Save 6 litres of water a minute by turning off your tap while you brush your teeth.

2. Boil what you need

Save water, money and energy by only boiling as many cups of water as you need.

3. Shower with less

Every minute you spend in a power shower uses up to 17 litres of water.

4. Save up your dirty clothes

Washing a full machine load of clothes uses less water and energy than 2 half-loads . This means lower bills as well.
